Official Solution

If your DualShock 4 wireless controller is not pairing or connecting to your PS4, it may be due to a synchronization issue or a problem with the connection.

Try connecting the controller directly to the PS4 with a high-quality USB cable. If that doesn't work, resetting the controller may be necessary.

Common Symptoms

  • The controller's light bar flashes white or blue continuously but never connects to the PS4.
  • Pressing the PS button does not turn on the console or connect the controller.
  • The controller works when plugged in via USB, but disconnects immediately when unplugged.
  • The PS4 does not recognize the controller even when connected with a USB cable.

Hardware Information

This is most commonly a sync or cable issue. However, if a controller will not connect under any circumstances, even after a reset, and multiple data cables have been tested, it may have an internal fault with its Bluetooth module or battery.

Step-by-Step Solutions

Not all USB cables will work for pairing. The cable must support data transfer, not just charging. The cable that came with the console or many smartphone data cables will work.

1

Connect with a Data-Transfer USB Cable

Power off your PS4 completely. Connect the controller to one of the PS4's front USB ports using a known-good data cable. Press the PS button on the controller to turn on the console. The controller should now be paired.

2

Reset the Controller

Turn off the PS4. Locate the small reset button on the back of the DualShock 4, near the L2 shoulder button. Use a paperclip or a similar tool to press and hold the button for 5-10 seconds. After resetting, reconnect the controller to the PS4 with the USB data cable and press the PS button.

3

Remove Device from PS4 Bluetooth Settings

Using a different, working controller, go to Settings > Devices > Bluetooth Devices. Find the controller that won't connect, select it, press OPTIONS, and choose 'Forget Device'. Then, try pairing the problematic controller again from scratch using a USB cable.

4

Boot in Safe Mode

With the PS4 turned off, connect the controller via USB cable. Press and hold the power button on the console until you hear the second beep. The PS4 will boot into Safe Mode, and the controller should be responsive. From there, you can select 'Restart PS4' to boot normally.
